Request Bikeways : St. Mary’s

This email will be sent to project managers and District 1 Councilman Robert Treviño. You can edit the text by clicking the yellow bar below. Thank you for considering bikes by adding a shared lane on St. Mary’s. St. Mary’s is the second most requested bike lane after Broadway. However, this not enough to make this a true complete street that is safe for the 8 to 80 year olds. Wide streets just encourage speeding, while adding bike lanes decreases speeds and crashes.

Prioritizing parking over a protected bikeway is a big mistake. This is our chance to serve future populations who will want to access the businesses by bike or scooter. Study after study show that installing protected bikeways, and even removing parking in the process, boosts business revenue up to 66%. They decrease crashes up to 90% and increase bike traffic up to 70%.

When parking isn’t directly in front of the business, people will walk more and pass more businesses, giving adjacent shops exposure as well. Not to mention the benefit of exercise. See more advantages here https://peopleforbikes.org/our-work/statistics/statistics-category/?cat=protected-bike-lane-statistics and https://peopleforbikes.org/green-lane-project/protected-bike-lanes-101/

As far as the residential concerns, creating a residential permit program for the hours when parking is an issue is the answer. Researching vacant lots and contacting those businesses with empty parking in the evening will replace the parking needed on the weekends.

Thank you for your consideration,

Protected Bikeways on St. Marys
